Facebook is down all the time
Posted on December 25th, 2007 No commentsAny frequent Facebook user probably experienced many down time from Facebook. Sometimes the apps are not accessible, sometimes the FBML is fucked up, sometimes facebook.com itself is down. This is getting ridiculous. How can they be down so frequently after hiring away so many Googlers…
Just want to rant about developing on the Facebook platform. It is a pain in the ass!

It’s all about effort and persistence
Posted on December 19th, 2007 No commentsI just read The Secret to Raising Smart Kids. It defines two mind sets of human:
- Fixed
- Growth
The fixed mind-set learners are helpless, whereas the growth mind-set learners are mastery-oriented. The former class thinks intelligence and IQ are fixed, thus cannot be changed or improved. The latter class thinks success only comes from efforts and persistence.
It is a very positive way of thinking for one’s own successes and failures during his lifetime. We succeed because we try hard, and we fail because we did not try hard enough.
I absolutely agree. Every successful and famous person we know succeeds because they try hard. Nobody gets rich by sitting his own ass on the couch and watching TV all day. Money do not drop from the sky.
I have to also add that you have to learn to love what you are learning/doing. You have to be passionate and care about learning and success. Passion is the enabler. However, we can’t love everything we encounter in life. What if a student is truly passionate about math, but not biology? Should he focus all his efforts in math and totally ignore biology and end up with an A in math and a F in biology?
The way I look at it is our education system does not allow focused learning, which is sad. It encourages broad learning, which tries to make every student equal and evaluate them using the same metrics. Only when schools start to help students focus on what they are most passionate about, the growth mind-set can be fostered, and the fixed mind-set eliminated. A student good at math is getting the growth mind-set mentality from the math class while getting the fixed mind-set from the biology class. The two mentalities contradict and the student is left doubting which mind-set is correct.
Just want to rant about the education system in our society…

‘Nuff said about Vista
Posted on December 7th, 2007 No commentsLearn how you “can” report Windows Vista problems to Microsoft using the Vista’s Windows Problem Reporting app. Typical Microsoft stuff…

College football bowl selection
Posted on December 3rd, 2007 No commentsVirginia Tech beats Boston College to earn a bid to play Kansas in the FedEx Orange Bowl. I am especially happy to see how the game ended against BC.
When we played BC at home earlier in the season, we totally dominated them on both ends, except… the last two minutes. Matt Ryan led BC to an unbelievable comeback victory and stunned us by throwing two late TD passes.
However, in the rematch for the ACC Championship game, Matt Ryan was under a similar situation. BC trailed by 7 points and needed a TD to tie the score. Vince Hall, the Hokies lineback, who did not play in the first BC game, intercepted Ryan’s desperation pass on 4th down. However, we could not get a first down and had to pun. Ryan then threw another interception to our other lineback, Xavier Adibi who caught the ball and returned it for a TD.
Matt Ryan and BC, take that!!!
You had two TDs in the first game, but you had two interceptions in the rematch. Gotta love it.
On another note, West Virginia lost to rival Pittsburgh although the Mountaineers was a 4-TD favor and Pittsburg was only 4-7. They totally fucked up and lost the game and a chance to play for the national championship. Since VT and WVU used to play a rivalry game every year whey we were in the Big East, I am just so happy to see West Virginia lose.
It was a very nice weekend to celebrate both victories. However, I would rather play Missouri instead of Kansas. Our defense will suffocate the Jayhawks. They don’t even have a chance. They can only beat cupcakes. Look how they fared against Missouri. Moreover, since Noah used to go to Missouri, I would love to kick his ass. But I guess he has to root for VT now that we play his rival Kansas.
